30 Marines, 1 Sailor killed in helicopter crash

“While we mourn the loss of these heroes, we will honor their sacrifice by continuing our mission to bring democracy to the people of Iraq,” said Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Sattler, commanding general, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Life as a combat Marine is hazardous even when moving from one place to another. I doubt most who have not served in the military have any concept of those hazards.

  When I was a mechanized infantry company commander, motor pool operations with dozens of armored vehicles made me crazy because they’re so dangerous. Soldiers get squashed or badly injured regularly.
