I want to emphasize the fact that they’re actually very rare. There’s 80 million gun owners, and over the past six years I’ve gathered about 2,000 incidents of these Negative Outcomes that occurred. So, actually driving a car is a lot more dangerous, or more likely to cause casualties. But, as my late colleague William April said, ‘It’s not the odds, it’s the stakes.’ Because the nature of the kind of incidents that I describe in the book, in many cases, permanently changes someone’s life. As a friend of mine likes to say:
When you carry a gun, you give up the right to defend your honor.
She is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm on the first victim and Attempted Murder on the second.

Bloody weekend in Texas
Five children in North Texas shot themselves or another child this past weekend in four separate incidents. A 4-year-old boy in Fort Worth died and another is in grave condition.

In another case being investigated by Arlington Police, an eight year old girl shot in the buttocks continues to recover.
Police say the family told them that the weapon, a nine millimeter semi-automatic Uzi-Mach 10, fired after she sat on it.
Authorities say the weapon was reported stolen in Bastrop near Austin.
Let’s try to keep weapons out of the hands of kids. Not taking steps to prevent their access is a Serious Mistake. I’m not much for trigger locks or cables but a lockbox or even a toolbox that can be locked isn’t that expensive.

The Downsides of Intervention

The number of people who feel obligated to Intervene in other people’s quarrels simply amazes me. Someone commented on my Tactical Professor Facebook page that “Society is a better place when people practice self sacrifice.” That’s not the way our ‘system’ in America is set up. The American system of social controls has changed a great deal over the course of our history as a nation. At one time, we had to help each other. Unfortunately, the evolution of the Criminal Justice arena (and I use the word arena deliberately) during the 20th and 21st Centuries means, with regard to intervention in criminal events we are not directly involved in, that time is long past. Even the POlice take a risk when they intervene in others’ affairs despite the fact that it’s their job, they are equipped for it, and they have legal protections for doing so.
Your family is depending on you and they are your first and foremost obligation. No one will be a better father or mother to your children than you are. Don’t jeopardize that long term relationship for the short term gratification of Intervention for which you are unlikely to receive any thanks anyway. Intervention is all risk and little to no reward. No benefit accrues to the person intervening on another’s behalf.
Crusading against Intervention has become a big issue for me since I began researching Negative Outcomes. Much like advocating taking a Defensive Driving Course, it’s largely Quixoteish but I feel the need anyway. It’s my own form of Intervention, I guess.
Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own.
At one time, I had it in my mind that Intervention was a good idea but my Father always advised me against it. When I was a teenager, he told me about a guy he knew who was stabbed to death during the course of an Intervention just like the incident above.
Don’t get involved, Son.
Over time, I realized that it was one of those issues where the older I got, the smarter my Father became. My research into Serious Mistakes completely confirmed the wisdom of what he told me. The Intervention section of my Negative Outcomes database is huge. Some of those Negative Outcomes are so bizarre and so unexpected that they bring to mind something the Real Dr. House mentioned at last weekend’s Hemorrhage Arrest Course.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make sense.
Of all the books I’ve written, I still think Serious Mistakes Gunowners Make is the most important. Life is a minefield in many ways. Knowing what they look like helps to prevent you from stepping on one.

Avoiding Mistaken Identity Shootings
Another Mistaken Identity shooting occurred last week. A teenage girl came home from college to surprise her mother with a visit and got shot instead.

The teen’s mother told police that she was in her bedroom when she heard a commotion inside the house. She said the noise scared her and that she was not expecting anyone.
The mother said someone came running into her bedroom and that’s when she fired one round from her handgun. She then realized that she had shot her daughter, the report stated.
Obviously, in between hearing the commotion and firing the shot, the woman armed herself. It’s unlikely that she said anything in the process or her daughter probably would have said something back. The ‘surprise visit’ was most likely a bout of homesickness.
As I mention in my book Serious Mistakes Gunowners Make, any ‘bump in the night,’ or in this case “commotion inside the house,” carries with it a set of competing probabilities. It could be an intruder, which is the assumption most people make when they hear it, or it could be a member of their household. The member of the household is the most likely scenario. Why is this true? Simply because they live in the same house as you do and they are not constantly updating you on their location. Where teenagers, such as the unfortunate shootee in this incident, are present, the chances of them leaving the house and returning without informing their parents is extremely high. This fact has to be figured into the home defense plan of any parent or adult in the household.

This book is not about techniques of shooting firearms; it is about Decision Making, specifically what leads to Bad Decision Making.
Our Mindset leads to our Decisions. Our Decisions lead to our Actions. Our Actions lead to our Outcomes. This sequence controls our destiny in everything we do, including using a firearm for Personal Protection. Unfortunately, decision making in the firearms community tends to focus on the tool, the firearm, instead of the desired outcome for owning it. Endless debate goes on about caliber, action type, ammunition capacity, and other material oriented aspects of ownership. In the broad context, these are extremely minor considerations as long as the owner can operate the firearm adequately.
Where the discussions don’t go nearly enough is the circumstances involving the usage of firearms and the decisions about our internal software that we have to make. “Usage” doesn’t always mean shooting the gun, either. There are a host of other issues, such as storage, legalities of carrying, and even possession, that aren’t often discussed. But those internal software issues are much more likely to determine the difference between a Positive Outcome and a Negative Outcome than hardware issues like type of gun and caliber. The amount of misinformation that runs rampant within the gun community leads many new owners down the wrong path in their Mindset and potential Decision Making.
